Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TGL league did not get off to a good start—a deflating one, in fact. But the new league— postponed a year because of a dome collapse —will officially kick off on Jan. 7, 2025, the first Tuesday of the year. ESPN will televise the league’s first match, which will be held two days after the conclusion of the NFL’s regular season. A week later, ESPN will air TGL’s second match on Jan. 14, 2025, one night after the ‘Worldwide Leader in Sports’ airs its Monday night NFL playoff game. Then, on Jan. 21, 2025, the night after college football’s national championship game, ESPN will telecast TGL’s third match of the season. The remainder of the 15-game schedule will be announced later this year. “As we plan the 2025 launch of TGL presented by SoFi, we now have the first three Tuesdays in January circled to introduce sports fans to this new form of team golf, ” said Mike McCarley, founder and CEO of TMRW Sports, in a statement. “January is a tremendous time of year for fans looking for prime-time sports, and TGL’s launch will complement the start of the PGA Tour season. ” The PGA Tour typically begins its season in Hawaii at The Sentry and the Sony Open during the first two weeks of January. However, that could all change in 2025, depending on whether the tour changes its structure, thanks to a possible deal with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF). But if those two events remain on the golfing calendar next year, which is the most likely scenario, a travel snafu for some players could emerge. With The Sentry penciled in to finish on Sunday, Jan. 5, some TGL players would have to fly back to South Florida from Maui for the inaugural match two nights later. TGL will host its events at the newly updated SoFi Center, a steel-supported structure located on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. More information about the intricacies of the SoFi Center follows below: SoFi Center is an unprecedented, tech-infused arena for golf and will create an intimate and unique “greenside” experience for fans with 1, 500 seats wrapping around TGL’s field of play, which is similar to the size of a football field at 97-yards long and 50-yards wide. TGL matches will start with teams teeing off from real grass tee boxes to play custom-designed, virtual holes projected onto a 3, 000-square-foot screen (64’x46’), more than 20 times larger than a standard golf simulator screen (144 square feet, 16’x9’). Once teams are inside approximately 50 yards they will transition to live action and finish each hole within TGL’s GreenZone, a 22, 475-square-foot short game complex that transforms between holes. There will be future superstars selected and there will be straight-up busts. The annual NFL crap shoot makes and breaks front-office people across the league. They spend the offseason trying to figure out how to stay employed. If that’s where your general manager is, we have a look at the top bust-proof prospects who are expected to be taken in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft: Caleb Williams, USC, quarterback This a is one-foot putt. Williams, who is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick by the Chicago Bears, should be a superstar. If he works at his craft the way he is expected to, there’s no reason to think Williams will not live up to expectations. Marvin Harrison Jr. , Ohio State, wide receiver There’s more than a handful of scouts who think Harrison is the best overall talent in the draft. He’s been NFL ready for a couple of years and should be an elite player at his position in short order. The namesake of his Pro Football Hall of Famer father was born for this. Jayden Daniels, LSU, quarterback Daniels is not as much of a sure thing as Williams, but there is a reason why some analysts have said they’d rather have Daniels. He is the perfect prospect for today’s NFL as he is a threat with his arm and legs. Plus, he has a huge ceiling. He should be the league’s next must-see young quarterback. Rome Odunze, wide receiver, Washington Odunze is not far behind Harrison in this wide receiver class. He could go as high as No. 6 to the New York Giants. He is so smooth and dominant. Think Davante Adams. He’ll be a star. Terrion Arnold, cornerback, Alabama Our first defensive player on this offensive-heavy list, Arnold is the surest thing at cornerback. He is primed to be a No. 1 cornerback at the next level. He has played at the highest college level and he has the talent, smarts and attitude to excel at the NFL level. Fuaga is nasty and tough. He could be an instant impact addition. But he is a first-round pick and he should become a true No. 1 for one lucky team. This week’s field does not feature a ton of firepower, with Jordan Spieth being the only player ranked within the top 20 of the world. Defending champion Jason Day, Tom Kim, and Will Zalatoris will also tee it up this week, as will Presidents Cup hopefuls Adam Scott, Si Woo Kim, and Sungjae Im. TPC Craig Ranch, located north of Dallas in McKinney, will host this tournament for the fourth time. K. H. Lee won it in 2021 and 2022, at 25-under and 26-under, respectively, the first two instances in which this layout held it. Day won at 23-under last year. As such, we are looking at players who make birdies in bunches to perform well on this generous layout this week. Jordan Spieth finishes in the top 5 in his hometown Jordan Spieth, who has had an up-and-down season thus far, currently ranks 11th on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained and third in birdie or better conversion percentage at 37. 54%. This stat takes Spieth’s total number of birdies made this season (134) and divides that by the total number of greens hit (357). He may play erratic at times, but Spieth has once again relied on his putter to keep himself in the mix on multiple occasions. He obviously has made plenty of birdies, too. We see him contending again at TPC Craig Ranch, where he finished solo second two years ago and tied for ninth in 2021. We like the Dallas native to finish in the top 5 at +360. Photo by Jared C. Mark Hubbard continues strong play Thirty-four-year-old Mark Hubbard has not missed a cut in the 12 events he has played this year. He tied for fourth at the rain-shortened AT&amp; T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, his best individual finish. But Hubbard also finished solo third at last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans, alongside Ryan Brehm in the two-man team-play event. He has played well, partly thanks to his ability to make plenty of birdies. The San Jose State product has made 187 of them this season, which ranks 5th on the PGA Tour. Given that TPC Craig Ranch yields plenty of par-breakers, Hubbard will rely on his solid tee-to-green play to make a ton of birdies this week. DraftKings has Hubbard listed at +650 to finish within the top 10, but if you feel bullish like we do, +1400 for a top-5 finish is a solid price. Tom Hoge bounces back after missed cut Widely regarded as one of the best ball-strikers on the PGA Tour, Tom Hoge will contend again this week in the Dallas area. He missed the cut at last week’s Zurich Classic, but before that, he picked apart Harbour Town Golf Links over the first 36 holes and was in the mix for most of the weekend. A disappointing 2-over 74 final round dropped him a few spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 18th, a result much worse than what his performance indicated. Hoge has played well in other big events this year, namely in California, where he tied for sixth at Pebble Beach and finished solo eighth at Riviera. He has had a solid year, even though he did not receive an invitation to Augusta National. Still, Hoge ranks behind only Scottie Scheffler on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: approaching the green. He also ranks second in total birdies made this season with 209. His 4. 58 birdies per round ranks ninth on the PGA Tour. Hoge is a sneaky-good putter as well. During his 39 rounds this season, Hoge has averaged 81. 5 feet of putts made per round, good for fifth on the PGA Tour. He has all the pieces to play at the highest level, and considering this week’s weaker field, we like Hoge to finish in the top-5 at +650. CJ Cup Byron Nelson Longshot Pick Since missing the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in mid-March, Adam Schenk has recorded three top-20 finishes, including a tie for fifth at the Valero Texas Open and a tie for 12th at The Masters. At +5500 to win, we like the idea of Schenk finally breaking through and securing his first PGA Tour victory at that price. Although he struggles somewhat with his ball striking, Schenk still finds plenty of ways to make birdies, ranking seventh on tour in total birdies made this season. He also makes plenty of putts from inside of 10 feet, an essential part of the winning formula regardless of the course. Schenk has been trending in the right direction, and considering he did not play at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, he will arrive in Texas well-rested and refreshed. Boiler up! CJ Cup Byron Nelson Winner With the CJ Group taking over the sponsorship naming rights for this year’s tournament, we believe a player represented by this South Korean conglomerate will emerge victorious. As such, we are picking Si Woo Kim to win his fifth career PGA Tour event this week, his first since the 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii. Kim has had a solid year, making all 11 cuts while recording five top 20 finishes. His best result came at The Players Championship, where he tied for sixth, while his worst finish came at The Genesis Invitational, where he tied for 44th. He has a beautiful swing, and the stats reflect that. Kim currently ranks fourth in strokes gained: tee-to-green this season, but his putter has held him back. He is currently 141st on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting. Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images Si Woo Kim at the 2024 RBC Heritage. Still, the Seoul, South Korea native makes plenty of birdies, a necessity on this course. He has made 178 of them this season—good for 11th on the PGA Tour—and has also recorded nine eagles, which ranks fourth. Kim can go low, which explains why he ranks within the top 12 on tour in both adjusted and actual scoring averages. Kim resides in the Dallas area, so that should surely help him, too. We love his price at +2200 to win this week. Only Jordan Spieth and Jason Day have shorter odds than Kim, which is a testament to Kim’s talent and the weak field. After their own 1-2 finish in Australia, can Ferrari really put the pressure to Red Bull this season? We are three races into the Formula 1 season. While much remains the same from 2024 — Red Bull is leading the Constructors’ Championship and Max Verstappen is atop the Drivers’ standings — recent events have shaken the field up a bit. Mercedes is floundering, McLaren is strong, and Ferrari has certainly closed the gap to Red Bull. Then there is a fascinating fight shaping up in the midfield, one that has Visa Cash App RB F1 Team in front at the moment thanks to a strong drive from Yuki Tsunoda in the Australian Grand Prix. With so much on the line, and a short break until the Japanese Grand Prix, this is a good time to take stock of where each team stands at the moment. But rather than a simple review, we’ll look at the biggest question facing each team right now. So far, the questions have largely been on the negative side of the ledger. Earlier this week we took a look at Alpine, asking how quickly progress will come for a team desperately needing a step forward. We also asked whether Sauber can fix a pit stop issue that has plagued them in each of the season’s first three races. On Wednesday we asked whether Williams would be facing a hangover after everything they went through in Australia, whether Haas had truly eliminated their biggest gremlin from last season and yes, just how hot the seat really is under Daniel Ricciardo. We started Thursday with a look at Aston Martin. Then it was a look at their power unit supplier, Mercedes. Sure it is early, but is it already too late for the Silver Arrows? However, Thursday afternoon the questions turned positive. It started with McLaren, and whether they can maintain their red-hot start. Now we turn to perhaps the most positive question of all. Ferrari: Can they beat Red Bull? It is not as outlandish a thought as it might sound at the start. There have been signs that Ferrari could mount a serious challenge this year dating back to pre-season testing. Carlos Sainz Jr. And Charles Leclerc finished one-two on the timing sheets, and while pre-season testing results always require the biggest grains of salt — and the Ferrari duo laid down those times on a tire compound that would not be available the following week — it was still a strong performance. More importantly, the drivers felt much more confident in the SF-24 than they did its predecessor. The SF-23. “The car is reacting the way that we wanted it to, but it is still difficult to assess its level of competitiveness right now. The feeling is better than the base we started from last year. Now, it’s full focus on the race and I can’t wait to be back on track next week, ” said Leclerc following testing. “We can be pleased with what we’ve achieved during this test, both in terms of the mileage covered and the raft of data it has provided. On top of that, both Charles and Carlos were happy with how things went. These were three productive days, with no technical problems, which is what you want most, especially when it’s the only session before the start of the season, ” added Team Principal Frederic Vasseur. “Our first goal was to see if the SF-24 performed predictably, not being overly sensitive to variations in the external conditions and that it was easy to drive. From what Charles and Carlos have said and looking at the consistency of their performance over a long run, it seems we were successful on this front, ” continued the Ferrari boss. “It’s very important to have the car behave like this as it means the driver can quickly get an understanding of its characteristics and then get the most out of it. ” Of course, the bigger question was what would happen when the time counted for real. Ferrari delivered the following week, with Leclerc qualifying in second and Sainz behind him in fourth. In the race itself it was Sainz who grabbed the final podium spot — in the wake of a Red Bull one-two — but Leclerc’s fourth-place finish is certainly of note. The Ferrari driver struggled with his brakes early in the race, complaining early and often of the SF-24 pulling to the right when breaking, but he stayed calm and patient. As the situation eased in the second part of the race, Leclerc delivered a strong finish for the team, signs of growth and maturity as a driver. This was reminiscent to many of his performance in the 2023 finale, when he worked through the various scoring permutations as the laps ticked down in Abu Dhabi, trying to find a way to deliver second for Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship. Then in Saudi Arabia, it was another strong weekend for the team, albeit under difficult circumstances. With Sainz facing an emergency appendectomy for appendicitis, reserve driver Ollie Bearman — all of 18 years old — climbed into the SF-24 for his first F1 qualifying session after just an hour of practice. He advanced to Q2 and started the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in P11. In the race itself it was Leclerc who grabbed the third podium spot — again following a Red Bull one-two — but in his debut Bearman finished seventh, banking six critical points for the team. Even more impressive? The young driver held off fellow countrymen Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages, despite driving on older tires. Then came Australia. There were signs that Ferrari would pose a serious challenge to Red Bull early in the week, as some race pace simulations showed that the Scuderia could truly bring the fight to Red Bull. And while Max Verstappen held off the field for pole position, Sainz captured P2 alongside Verstappen just over two weeks after his surgery. With Leclerc starting in fifth, Ferrari was in position for another big chunk of points. In the race itself, it did not take long for Sainz to get by Verstappen. On just the second lap of the Australian Grand Prix Sainz pulled past his old Toro Rosso teammate, and when Verstappen’s RB20 started smoking from the right rear, it was clear the door was open for a scarlet afternoon in Melbourne. Verstappen would retire, and Sainz would cruise to victory. But not to be outdone, Leclerc made up a number of spots, giving Ferrari a one-two of their own. Now, with the grid heading to Japan, Ferrari sits just four points behind Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship. Of course, these are early days. We are just three races into a 24-race marathon. We have seen “challengers, ” to Red Bull before, such as Aston Martin a season ago. Two years ago it was Ferrari who posed the big threat in the early going, as the Scuderia actually led Red Bull after four races. A series of blunders and breakdowns would be their downfall, and cost former team boss Mattia Binotto his position. That might be why Vasseur cautioned this week that the team needs to keep a measured outlook, and not get carried away. “We were not disappointed with our results in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, nor are we getting carried away because of this one-two finish, ” said Vasseur. “We must continue with this approach in the coming races because that’s the only way we are going to get the results we want. ” Still, for a sport — and a fanbase — clamoring for a title fight it is hard not to dream. The last two seasons saw Red Bull pull away from the field, leaving little doubt at the front of the grid on a week-to-week basis. Given the growth that Ferrari has shown from last season to this moment, and given how well both Sainz and Leclerc and performing at the moment, and given how comfortable they have seemed in the SF-24, you cannot fault Ferrari fans for daring to dream.

On Friday ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, reports surfaced that Marko was facing his own internal investigation, and Marko himself indicated that he was unsure of his future with the team. That prompted a pledge of loyalty from none other than Max Verstappen. Following qualifying, where the three-time Drivers’ champion captured his first pole position at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Verstappen made it clear that he would be backing Marko. Now, following a reported meeting with Oliver Mintzlaff, the managing director of Red Bull GmbH — the racing team’s parent company — Marko is telling the F1 world that he will remain with the team. Speaking with Sky Sports Germany, Marko addressed the rumors of his possible suspension, as well as his meeting with Mintzlaff. “It was a very good conversation. Of course there has to be calm back in the team, ” said Marko to Sky Sports Germany. “That’s a priority. We agreed on all points. I’ll continue here. The term of my contract is still three years away. But as I said: there has to be calm. ” He also addressed the backing he received from Verstappen on Friday. “It was very impressive, ” added Marko. “I’m very grateful to him for that. But he is one of the few who has strength of character and shows loyalty. ” Whether this development puts a rest to the ongoing firestorm at Red Bull, or only fans the flames further, remains to be seen. Reports surfaced last season of a potential power struggle within the team, and while the involved parties did their best a year ago to tamp down those rumors, the developments of recent days have only increased the palace intrigue surrounding the team. Then there is the serious matter of the underlying investigation into Horner’s alleged “inappropriate behavior. ” Recent days have seen a call for greater transparency from Red Bull following the dismissal of the charges against Horner, as well as reports that the unidentified female employee who raised the allegations has been suspended by the team.

As reported by BBC Sport, the official complaint comes following two different whistleblower complaints lodged with the FIA regarding Horner: BBC Sport has learned that one was made to the FIA ethics and compliance hotline on 2 February, and made direct reference to Horner’s behaviour towards a female employee, asked the FIA to look into it, and expressed a fear that Red Bull could try to cover it up. The second complaint on 6 March referenced the first and warned that the whistleblower would next inform the media. Soon after the allegations against Horner were raised Red Bull retained external counsel to conduct an investigation. At the conclusion of that investigation the grievance against Horner raised by the team employee was dismissed. Horner was with the team for pre-season testing, as well as the first two races of the season. Furthermore, following the dismissal of the grievance, the involved team employee appealed the decision to the team. Red Bull has reportedly suspended the female employee as well. This latest step comes as senior figures around the sport continue to call for greater transparency. Two of Horner’s peers — Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff and McLaren CEO Zak Brown — have called for both F1 and the FIA to shine a greater light on the allegations and investigation into Horner. Said Brown ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix: “I think the sanctioning body [the FIA] has a responsibility and authority to our sport and the fans. All of us in Formula 1 are ambassadors for the sport, on and off the track, like you see in other sports. “They need to make sure things have been fully transparent with them. And I don’t know what those conversations are - and it needs to be thorough and fully transparent, that they come to the same conclusion that has been given by Red Bull and that they agree with the outcome. “That’s what needed by those who run the sport, to be able to draw a line under it. And until then there will continue to be some level of speculation by people and I don’t think that’s healthy for the sport. ” For his part, Horner continues to deny any wrongdoing, and has pressed the media that it is time to “ move on: ” “The reality is that there was a grievance raised, it was dealt with in the most professional manner by the group, that appointed an independent KC, one of the most reputable in the land. “He took time to investigate all the facts. He looked at everything and he came to a conclusion where he dismissed the grievance. “As far as I’m concerned, as far as Red Bull is concerned, we move on. ” As much as Horner may wish to turn the page, this matter might not be going away any time soon.

The Indiana Hoosiers were among the most disappointing men’s basketball teams in the country this past season. After making the NCAA tournament in each of head coach Mike Woodson’s first two seasons leading the program, the wheels fell off during the 2023-2024 season. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what was wrong with the team. Indiana was just about the worst shooting team in America. The Hoosiers barely ever shot a three, and when they did, they probably missed. Only 27. 8 percent of Indiana’s field goal attempts came from three-point range, which ranked No. 351 in DI. The team’s 32. 4 percent three-point field goal percentage ranked No. 255 in DI. Indiana’s guard play struggled as starting point guard Xavier Johnson was in-and-out of the lineup with injuries, and the team never really recovered. At one point during conference season, Indiana lost eight of 10 games against Big Ten opponents. That’s when rumors began swirling that Woodson could be on the hot seat. As Johnson got healthier Indiana started playing much better, winning its final four games in the regular season and its opener in the Big Ten tournament to finish 19-14 overall, and 11-11 in conference including the tournament. The late season hot streak wasn’t good enough to get Indiana into March Madness, but it did save Woodson’s job, if it ever really was in jeopardy. From the moment the season ended, this became a critical offseason for the coaching staff to get in the transfer portal and reload the roster — especially after five-star freshman Liam McNeeley decommitted. So far, the Hoosiers are crushing it in the transfer portal. The Hoosiers have the No. 1 transfer class in the country according to 247 Sports, with Kansas, UCLA, Missouri and Illinois rounding out the top-5. Indiana landed three terrific veteran players, and a few more could be on the way. Photo by Meg Oliphant/Getty Images Kanaan Carlyle gives Indiana a bucket-getting combo guard Carlyle was the No. 59 overall recruit in the class of 2023, according to 247 Sports, and immediately lived up to the hype upon debuting for Stanford in Dec. He dropped 28 points against a loaded Arizona team in his fourth career game, and followed it up with 31 points against a tournament-bound Washington State team a couple weeks later. Carlyle was briefly on NBA radars as a one-and-done, but his three-point shot eventually tailed off and cooled interest. He entered the transfer portal after head coach Jerod Haase was fired, and was ranked as a top-10 transfer in the country by 247 Sports. A long 6’3 combo guard, Carlyle is talented at creating shots for himself and his teammates even if he’s not always the most efficient scorer. He can get off a decent look at all three levels, showing an ability to shoot three-pointers with volume even if they didn’t always go in by finishing 32-for-100 from deep on the year. He loves to pull-up from mid-range off the dribble, making near 40 percent of his non-rim twos on the year with only 12. 5 percent of those baskets being assisted. His finishing needs work (54 percent at the rim), but he has the tools to be there if he adds craft. Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images Myles Rice is the floor general Indiana needed Washington State point guard Myles Rice was one of the best stories in college basketball last season. After enrolling during the 2021-2022 season, Rice was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and missed two years recovering. He debuted this past season as an older freshman, and was immediately one of the best players on a solid Cougars team that reached the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament. He was named 2024 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year at the end of the season. At 6’3, Rice has good size for a lead guard. He more of a playmaker than a scorer, and finished the year with an impressive 22. 7 percent assist rate. Rice is not a good three-point shooter — only 27. 5 percent from deep last year — but the fact that he took a lot of triples (131 attempts from three) and shot 81 percent from the foul line hints that he could be in for a leap as a shooter next year. Rice and Carlyle complement each other well — Rice as a playmaker, Carlyle as a scorer — as long as they can improve as shooters. The former McDonald’s All-American transferred in from Oregon after a down freshman year, and immediately reminded everyone how good he is once he got to Bloomington. Ware left school after the season to enter the 2024 NBA Draft, where he’s a projected first round pick. Woodson targeted Ballo after two standout seasons at Arizona, and he committed to Indiana with reports of a $1. 2 million NIL payment. At 7-foot, 260 pounds, Ballo is the type of big man teams need to compete in the Big Ten. He’s already been a productive and efficient scorer for one of the best teams in the country for multiple seasons. He’s an excellent rebounder and can capably play drop coverage while deterring shots at the rim. Ballo finished in the top-20 in the country in both offensive and defensive rebound percentage, and his five percent block rate was No. 175 in the country. ESPN had Ballo rated as the top overall player in the portal. Indiana still has three open scholarships Woodson already landed three starters in the portal. With Trey Galloway, Mackenzie Mgbako, and Malik Reneau all returning from last year’s team, Indiana is building a deep, veteran team with a high ceiling. There’s still three open scholarships, and the Hoosiers should only be targeting one thing: shooting. An intriguing shooter joined the transfer portal on Monday when Illinois wing Luke Goode submitted his paperwork. Goode is a 6’7 wing who made 38. 8 percent of his threes over three seasons with Illinois. A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Goode has Indiana ties all over his family, including his uncle Trent Green, the former NFL QB. With Purdue and Illinois turning over huge portions of their roster, the Hoosiers will be expected to compete near the top of the Big Ten entering the season. Indiana added two tremendous guards, an experienced and productive big man, and still have a few more roster slots left. No one has nailed the transfer portal this season quite like Indiana.

Chris Kirk agrees with the decision. ATLANTA — During his session with the media on Tuesday, Scottie Scheffler revealed a new strategy PGA Tour pros had decided to employ from the 18th tee. Instead of playing down its intended fairway—a challenging one to find, if I may add—numerous pros hit their tee shots down the par-4 10th, which runs parallel to East Lake’s closing hole. Playing down the 10th provides players with an easier angle while taking the famous lake out of play—a no-brainer for golfers of this caliber. Countless trees also came down between the 10th and 18th fairways as part of Andrew Green’s restoration, thus making it easier to play East Lake’s final hole from the 10th. When Tour Championship officials learned this, they invoked internal out-of-bounds on the 10th for safety reasons and to protect the integrity of East Lake’s recent restoration. Now, players cannot bomb it down the 10th fairway, unless they want to hit their third shot from the 18th tee. The PGA Tour also established internal out-of-bounds on the par-4 7th for those playing the uphill, dogleg right par-5 6th for similar reasons. Nevertheless, Chris Kirk, who returns to East Lake for the first time since 2014, agreed with the tour’s decision. “I think it’s very necessary. I talked to [PGA Tour Vice President of Rules &amp; Officiating] Steve Rintoul and a few officials yesterday while playing a practice round. I hadn’t played the hole yet, and not that they were looking for advice from me, but I encouraged them to do something just because that’s not how the hole is designed, ” Kirk explained on Wednesday. “For us as players, we’re going to do whatever we feel like is going to give us the best score, and it sounded to me that was a no-brainer to go down No. 10. ” The internal OB debate. . . Players will face a difficult stance for their second, as the steep grade of the fairway forces a low-ball flight from impact—not the desired trajectory for trying to find a firm, fast green in two. The 10th, meanwhile, plays much flatter, and players could, in theory, have an easier time finding the putting surface from that fairway. But the tour put that notion to bed, considering player and fan safety more than anything. “This decision was made primarily out of safety concerns, specifically to prevent players from effectively putting people in harm’s way by taking an alternate route, ” said PGA Tour chief referee Gary Young. “When it sounds like that is going to be a possibility, it necessitates an internal boundary. ” Kirk considered other variables when advocating for this decision. “It would have been a pretty bad look on television if you’re finishing a golf tournament and everybody is hitting it down the wrong fairway, ” Kirk added. “It would have distracted for sure from the renovation of the golf course, which is fantastic. The green complexes are so fun and unique, and they have such a great variety. I think the course is great, which would have distracted everyone from that if we were all playing a hole down the wrong fairway. ” Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley admitted that he would employ this strategy, playing down the 10th. But now, he will no longer do so. Bradley did applaud the restoration, noting that Green and his team did a “really good job. ” But perhaps next year, East Lake and the tour will soften the terrain of the 18th somewhat, eliminating the thought of playing down the 10th altogether. “I don’t think that would be a terrible idea, ” Kirk said when approached with this idea. “I don’t think it’s awful the way it is right now. It certainly makes it play very, very narrow. Yeah, they may want to soften that a teeny bit.
